When God is an “Entity,” the goal is survival and avoidance of punishment. When God is “Father,” the
goal is communion and restoration. Men need to move from perceiving God as a “looming power” to an
“accessible person.” In psychological terms, this is the transition from Fear-Based Attachment to Secure
Attachment. For many of us, the journey toward spiritual identity begins with a fundamental
misunderstanding of who God is. We often view Him not as a present, accessible Father, but as a distant,
looming “Entity”—an ominous power to be navigated rather than a person to be known. This perspective
doesn’t develop in a vacuum; it is frequently the byproduct of an unhealthy, fear-based reverence. Instead
of running to Him in our moments of need, we find ourselves instinctively running from Him, haunted by
the suspicion that His presence brings judgment rather than restoration.
This distortion is particularly acute for men, who often struggle to reconcile the concepts of “Godly love”
with the traditional models of fatherhood they have observed. To understand why we view God as a cold
authority figure, we must look at the roots of our ancestral and societal trees. For the African American
community, this perception is often tied to a historical “God of oppression”—a version of divinity used to
justify suffering and demand submissive compliance. This generational trauma created a spiritual
architecture where God was seen as a Master to be served, rather than a Father to be loved.
This spiritual disconnect is further compounded by the modern crisis of the home. According to data from
the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 18.3 million children in America—about one in four—live without a
biological, step, or adoptive father in the home. Research consistently shows that children raised in
father-absent homes are more likely to face poverty, struggle with behavioral issues, and drop out of
school. However, the statistic that often goes unmeasured is the spiritual vacuum left in the wake of an
absent or emotionally distant father. When the primary template for earthly authority is missing or broken,
our ability to conceive of a loving Heavenly Father is severely compromised.
